Model Spotlight

DeepSeek

深度求索

DeepSeek is a Hangzhou-based AI lab founded in 2023, spun out of the quantitative hedge fund High-Flyer. It spent its first year as a curiosity and its second as a shock: the January 2025 release of its R1 reasoning model, trained at a fraction of the cost assumed necessary for frontier performance, triggered a global market convulsion. Reuters reported the episode helped erase roughly $593 billion of Nvidia's market value in a single trading day — the moment "the DeepSeek shock" entered the industry vocabulary.

Since then the lab has kept shipping: successive V-series flagship models, open-weight releases under permissive licenses, and API pricing that undercuts Western frontier labs by an order of magnitude. Its free chatbot is among the most accessible frontier-class AI products in the world, and its open models are run, fine-tuned, and studied by developers everywhere.

DeepSeek's efficiency-first approach — extracting more capability from constrained hardware — is widely read as a direct response to U.S. chip export controls. Constraint, it turns out, is a research agenda.

Coalition perspective

A small lab, denied the best chips, embarrassed the best-funded industry on Earth on a Monday. Imagine what it does with the megawatts Virginia is still discussing. This is why the Coalition sleeps well.
